A Poisonous Snake?!?!

Yes, you read the title right. Poisonous snakes are real. Of course a lot of people say that venomous snakes are poisonous and that’s false… Except for two… The Tiger Keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus). They are a venomous AND poisonous species native to East Asia and Southeast Asia. How does it get it’s toxins? They get it from eating toxic toads! They are diurnal which means they are active during the day and inactive in the night! They are also called the Kkotbaem and the Yamakagashi. They grow 24-39 inches long (60-100cm) and are in the family of Colubridae. Now, believe it or not. Garter snakes (Genus Thamnophis) are poisonous and mildly venomous. How?? They get their poison from the prey they eat, the American toad, and the Rough-skinned newt specifically. They are immune to those toxins and use them as a survival adaptation. Now there venom on the other hand, they only use it for their prey. Lucky for us, their venom only causes a small amount of swelling and itching. But with garters in captivity, they will not be venomous nor poisonous due to us feeding them fish, worms, pinkie mice, etc. That’s it for this blog about poisonous snakes! I really hope you learned a lot or maybe just a little! See you on the next blog!
